Ps 139:13-16 – “You made all the delicate inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous – how well I know it…You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed!”
Sometimes I wish I was someone else. Someone with more leadership, someone with more $$$, someone more talented, or someone with more success. And I end up not liking who I am. The reality is, we compare our day-to-day lives with others’ highlight reels. We focus on what we don’t have vs what we do have. We create a “superhuman” in our minds: one person’s wealth, another’s success, and a supermodel’s look, but that person doesn’t even exist.
BUT that is not what God has said. This Psalm reminds us that God has designed us just the way we are. We are uniquely made, and He loves us. He says we are worthy. Do we see that? Do we see ourselves as God sees us? Do we find our worth in others or in the One who made us? Can we celebrate who God has made us to be? Can we celebrate who God has made others to be?
One thing I learned about knitting from my kids (yes, they can knit) is that it is one stitch at a time. Think about that. God didn’t mass-produce us. He didn’t just slam us together. He didn’t create us and oops…now He has to think about a purpose for this one. He made us, one stitch at a time, with our personality, our strengths, and our passions, for a very specific purpose He had in mind. Yes, we are wonderfully made, and we are also uniquely made.
May we learn to say no to unhealthy comparisons. May we discover our uniqueness. May we celebrate who God has made each one of us to be.
